Downtown Scholar House

Built:
2011

Neighborhood:
Downtown Louisville

Located on the corner of First Street and Breckinridge Street in the SoBro neighborhood of Louisville, the Downtown Scholar House is a 54 unit facility developed by Marian Development Group to provide supportive housing and educational programs for single-parent students who qualify for Section 8 housing. The onsite academic services center provides space for academic advising, case management, a media lab and community meeting space, while a playground supports the fun and fitness needs of the children who live here.

The site, which is the second campus for the Family Scholar House, was selected for its proximity to Spalding University, the Jefferson Community and Technical College, the University of Louisville, bus transportation and community resources. The Family Scholar House aims to support the educational aspirations of single-parent families and to help foster college education to create valuable members of the community.

Two existing buildings on the project site have been renovated: the former home of the Filson Club, which has become the Scholar House community center, and a former city-owned hotel, which now sees new life as affordable apartments for single-parent students and their children. The two new structures which complete the project bring an urban townhome look and feel to this highly visible corner.
